POTTERY WEST

Simple, useful, beautiful and timeless ceramics. That’s what Catherine and Matt specialise in. Working under the name of Pottery West and out of their Sheffield studio, the duo design and make craft small-batch, wheel-thrown tableware. I discovered their beautiful wares a while back when I wrote about them for my ‘Maker of the Month’ column in the Simple Things magazine and have been a fan ever since.

Their purposely slow-paced and repetitive making process translates a sense of space and calm to the finished pieces which include a range of bowls, plates, mugs, jugs and jars. Each piece is made with a stoneware clay, for its high amount of surface texture and speckle, before being finished in a white, slate or gold glaze. Many of the pieces are only part glazed leaving some of the raw clay exposed, giving both a change of visual and texture.

As well as stocking their designs in a number of prestigious shops, including the very tasteful Toast, Catherine and Matt also sell their wares via their own online shop, which opens bi-monthly.

In light of the Covid-19 Epidemic, Pottery West have temporarily closed their online shop. However they are using this tricky time to concentrate on production. Therefore, any pre-orders or voucher purchases are welcome and will undoubtably help this wonderful studio to stay afloat during these testing time.
